Starting February 1, mandatory licensing for taxis will come into effect in Kyrgyzstan, as announced by Deputy Dastan Bekeshev.

According to him, the new policy could lead to many drivers losing their jobs, and the number of taxis on the capital's streets will noticeably decrease.

Dastan Bekeshev warned that taxi prices could rise to 700-800 soms instead of the usual 200-300 soms, as demand will significantly exceed supply.

He also expressed concerns about potential dissatisfaction among workers in the taxi industry. "Many drivers, especially migrants from other countries who have switched to taxi work, may find themselves in a difficult situation," the deputy noted.

Currently, about 7,000 drivers have received licenses, although at least 70,000 people are working in the market. Bekeshev believes that the government should consider extending the licensing deadlines for those who have not yet completed the process.
