Today, the world marks the entry into force of a landmark document — the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. This is reported by the UN News Service.

The Agreement was adopted in June 2023 and has so far been signed by 145 countries, of which 81 have already completed the ratification process.

The Agreement, based on the principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, establishes a solid legal foundation for the protection of two-thirds of the world's oceans. It also sets out a framework for international and inter-agency cooperation in the exploration of ocean resources.

The effective implementation of this agreement will be an important step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to the ocean, as well as contributing to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

“Coastal ecosystems are suffering from toxic chemicals and millions of tons of plastic waste, leading to the death of fish, sea turtles, birds, and mammals, and threatening human health through food contamination. In 2021, over 17 million tons of plastic entered the ocean, accounting for 85% of all marine debris. Projections indicate that this figure could double or triple annually. If nothing is done, by 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish,” the statement emphasizes.

The Agreement places responsibility on ocean polluters and introduces mechanisms for resolving potential disputes. According to its provisions, countries are required to assess the potential impact of their activities on the environment when undertaking any planned activities in international waters.

Scientists have noted that nearly 200,000 species of marine organisms are known to date, but the actual number may be significantly higher.
