The locals shared their knowledge with a Turmush correspondent.
One of these traditions is “öpkö chabuu”, which was described by Shaibubu Anyrakaeva from the Bakai-Ata district:
“This tradition is also known as ‘öpkö kaguu’. It is conducted not only during wedding celebrations but also in honor of people who have recovered from serious illnesses, returned from the army, or traveled a long distance. When a ‘kelinka’ comes into the house, the parents sit the newlyweds in front of them and hit them with goat lungs (Kyrgyz: ‘echkinin öpkösü’). This is done in the hope that all negativity will leave, and the young couple will become stronger, have children, and that they will all be healthy. That is why goat lungs are not eaten in Talas.”
Other customs common in the Bakai-Ata, Manas, and Kara-Buura districts of the Talas region were described by local resident Tilek Erkaliev.
“According to folk wisdom: ‘Salt gives flavor to food, and girls unite people from afar.’ Currently, there are various customs regarding the acceptance of a new family member — a daughter-in-law — in the seven regions of Kyrgyzstan. In Talas, for example, the traditions of ‘terdetmey’, ‘mücho saluu’, and ‘chyktanğa kirgizüü’ are popular,” noted T. Erkaliev.
“Chyktanğa kirgizüü” is a custom where senior matchmakers are invited into a room where the meat of the slaughtered livestock is located. There, they are treated to meat and tail fat, and they can choose their preferred pieces of meat.
