In the Center for General Medical Practice of the At-Bashinsky District, neurologist Aida Tentimishova shared information about a serious medical problem that affects many—stroke.

What is a stroke?

A stroke is an acute condition that occurs due to a sudden disruption of blood circulation in the brain. This leads to brain cells not receiving enough oxygen, which can cause their damage or death. This disease can lead to disability or even death, so it requires immediate medical intervention.
Types of stroke

Ischemic stroke

— occurs as a result of narrowing or blockage of blood vessels in the brain;

— accounts for about 80% of all strokes.
Hemorrhagic stroke

— occurs when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain;

— this type of stroke can affect both young people and children;

— its course is often severe and poses a threat to life.
Symptoms of stroke

The signs of the disease can be easily remembered using the FAST method:

F (Face) — facial asymmetry, one side droops;

A (Arm) — weakness in one arm or leg;

S (Speech) — speech becomes unclear;

T (Time) — do not waste time, call “103” immediately.
Additional symptoms:

— sudden headache;

— dizziness;

— vision impairment;

— loss of consciousness;

— balance disorders.
Causes of stroke

— high blood pressure (hypertension);

— cardiovascular diseases;

— diabetes;

— smoking;

— excess weight;

— lack of physical activity;

— frequent stress;

— excessive consumption of fatty and salty foods.
First aid (most important!)

If a stroke is suspected:

— immediately call “103”;

— lay the victim down and slightly elevate their head;

— loosen tight clothing;

— do not give food, water, or medication;

— if vomiting occurs, turn them on their side;

— calm the person and do not leave them alone;

— avoid self-medication.
Treatment of stroke

A stroke requires inpatient treatment:

— restoration of normal blood circulation;

— monitoring blood pressure levels;

— ensuring oxygen supply to the brain;

— rehabilitation measures (speech therapy, massage, physical exercises).

The first 3–4.5 hours are critically important—this is the so-called “golden time” for intervention.
Stroke prevention

— regularly check blood pressure;

— limit salt and fat intake;

— lead an active lifestyle (walking, sports);

— quit smoking and alcohol;

— control your weight;

— reduce stress levels;

— undergo regular medical check-ups.
Conclusion

A stroke is a disease that can be avoided. However, if medical help is sought too late, it can become extremely dangerous. Awareness of the signs, providing first aid, and preventive measures are crucial for everyone.
