An international team of scientists has presented the results of a long-term study spanning 47 years, dedicated to the physical activity of the population. The work was published in the scientific journal Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle on November 16, 2025.

The study was conducted on a Swedish population sample and included individuals aged 16 to 63 years. The researchers analyzed aerobic endurance, muscle strength, and power.

According to the obtained data, maximum physical capabilities are observed up to the age of 36. After reaching 35-40 years, a gradual decline in physical abilities begins, which intensifies with age. On average, by the age of 63, a person loses about 37% of their physical performance.

Interestingly, the rate of decline in physical condition is the same for both men and women, despite men typically showing higher absolute results on average.

The authors of the study emphasize that regular physical activity is a key factor in slowing down age-related changes. Furthermore, transitioning to an active lifestyle can significantly improve performance even in middle age.

It was also found that individuals with higher education demonstrate better results in aerobic and muscular endurance.

The scientists conclude that the decline in physical condition begins earlier than previously thought, necessitating a reassessment of approaches to preventing muscle mass loss with age.
