Popular products have been linked to worsening mental health

Scientists have concluded that ultra-processed foods can negatively affect not only physical but also mental health. This was established based on the analysis of data from nearly 400,000 participants from 60 countries, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

The study utilized results from an international survey conducted in 2023, which included a comprehensive assessment of mental state—from emotional mood to cognitive functions. Participants also indicated how often they consume ultra-processed foods. Important factors affecting mental health, such as income, level of physical activity, past traumas, and stress, were taken into account in the analysis.

The data revealed a clear link between regular consumption of ultra-processed foods and a decline in mental well-being. This was manifested in increased symptoms of depression and difficulties with emotional regulation and concentration.

Furthermore, the researchers used modeling to assess the contribution of ultra-processed foods to clinically significant mental distress on a global scale. According to their calculations, between 3.4 to 7.8 percent of the world's population may experience clinically significant mental distress related to the consumption of such products.
