The Unobvious Cause of Frequent Headaches Revealed

The lack of magnesium in the diet can affect the frequency and intensity of headaches, as well as increase stress levels. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Turkey who conducted a study based on the analysis of the nutrition and well-being of university staff. The results of their work were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition (Front Nutr).

The study involved 150 people aged 19 to 65 years. Participants filled out questionnaires regarding their diet and underwent an assessment of the impact of headaches on daily life (HIT-6) and the level of perceived stress (PSS-10). Additionally, the researchers examined how often magnesium-rich foods were included in the participants' diets.

The data obtained showed that individuals with low magnesium intake experienced significantly higher levels of headaches. This meant that headaches interfered more with their daily activities and work. Although the stress level was also found to be elevated in this group, statistically, this effect was less pronounced. Interestingly, as participants increased their magnesium intake, both the frequency of headaches and the level of subjective stress decreased.

The researchers emphasize the importance of magnesium for the functioning of the nervous system, noting that its deficiency can lead to increased sensitivity to stress and pain sensations.
