A natural remedy found to protect the intestines from inflammation

Research has shown that pear peel can significantly contribute to protecting the intestines from inflammation. This conclusion was made by scientists during the analysis of the effects of polyphenols found in pear peel on ulcerative colitis. The results of the study were published in the journal Food & Function (F&F).

In laboratory experiments, polyphenols from the peel demonstrated the ability to reduce the production of molecules that promote inflammation in immune system cells. Experiments on mice with artificially induced colitis showed that the addition of these compounds led to a decrease in weight loss, reduced levels of inflammation in the blood, and significant alleviation of damage to the colon tissues.

The scientists also emphasized the intestinal microbiota. Polyphenols contributed to an increase in bacterial diversity and the growth of microorganisms that help maintain the integrity of the intestinal mucosa, while the number of bacteria associated with inflammatory processes decreased. Additionally, there was a reduction in excessive activity of immune mechanisms in the mucosa, including pathways responsible for antigen recognition.

The authors of the study emphasize that the obtained data suggest that the benefits of consuming fruits may depend not only on the pulp but also on the peel. The scientists believe that pear peel can be considered a promising functional food component for maintaining intestinal health; however, further research is needed to confirm these results in humans.
