İmamoğlu is charged with 143 different crimes, including 12 counts of bribery, seven counts of money laundering, and seven counts of fraud.
The Attorney General's Office is seeking a sentence ranging from 828 to 2,352 years in prison, as previously reported.
In July 2025, İmamoğlu was already sentenced to 1 year and 8 months for "public insult" and "threats" against Chief Prosecutor Akın Gürlek in January 2025, although the details of the statements were not disclosed.
It is worth noting that the former mayor was detained on March 19, 2025, which sparked a wave of mass protests across Turkey. Shortly after his detention, İmamoğlu was removed from his position as mayor and accused of bribery. Currently, the 53-year-old politician is considered the main opponent of Erdoğan in the upcoming presidential elections in 2028.
The main opposition party in Turkey, the CHP, has already confirmed Ekrem İmamoğlu's candidacy for the presidency in these elections.
