Deputy Tabyldy Muratbekov: Kyrgyzstanis should pay more for water

The people's deputy calls the increase in tariffs "insignificant"

Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Tabyldy Muratbekov has proposed the need for a radical revision of water supply tariffs in Kyrgyzstan.

In his opinion, the average price for a cubic meter of water could increase by 14.38 soms, which would lead to a total cost of 36.99 soms.

The reasons for such changes, the deputy explains, are the serious crisis in the water supply sector. According to him, the current tariffs do not cover the real costs of water supply, which hinders regional water utilities from modernizing their networks. Muratbekov notes that in some regions, the infrastructure is on the verge of collapse, and a lack of funding prevents necessary upgrades.

Although the price increase seems significant, the deputy himself considers its impact on citizens' budgets to be "insignificant." As an example, he cited the cost of bottled water: a liter costs more than 25 soms, while a cubic meter (1000 liters) of tap water, even with the increase, will remain significantly cheaper.

The final decision on this issue will be made after discussions with the relevant government agencies.
