He also added that the United States may return to nuclear testing on an "equal basis" with Russia and China; however, such tests will not be conducted using megaton-class explosive devices in the atmosphere. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision regarding the resumption of live nuclear weapon tests.
Washington is focused on the possibility of reaching an agreement with Russia and China on nuclear testing and verification mechanisms. Christopher Ya expects productive meetings with partners from Moscow and Beijing, which may take place in Geneva and Vienna.
A State Department representative also noted that China could become a participant in potential new agreements between Russia and the United States on reducing nuclear arsenals.
In Ya's opinion, a multilateral approach will help avoid an uncontrolled nuclear arms race, limit their buildup, and address issues concerning other nuclear states not party to the treaty.
It should be reminded that the New START Treaty, signed in 2010, was in effect for ten years and was extended until February 5, 2026. It limited the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 units and provided for a system of mutual inspections and notifications. With the expiration of the treaty, these mechanisms will cease to function.
