In order to reduce water losses used for irrigating agricultural lands, the Ministry of Water Management and Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic plans to completely concrete the Large Chui Canal (LCC). This was announced by Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, at a meeting of the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh, which deals with agricultural policy, water resources, and environmental protection.

In response to the remark by Deputy Azizbek Tursunbaev that currently water losses in the LCC reach 40-50%, Torobaev stated that it is important to carry out cleaning and concreting works on the canal, as this water source is used by the entire Chui region.

According to Torobaev, the LCC is divided into two parts: the eastern part starts in the Kemin area and runs through the Chui region, while the western part goes through Bishkek.

“We plan to completely concrete the LCC. For this purpose, we are appealing to the EBRD for 23 million dollars for 12.5 kilometers of concrete coverage. We also expect funding from the state budget and from the ADB for concreting a total of 100 kilometers,” he noted, adding that water losses indeed amount to up to 40%.

In addition, the minister reported that the Cabinet of Ministers plans to construct 106 reservoirs.

“Repair work on the remaining reservoirs from the Soviet era is ongoing,” added Bakyt Torobaev.
