U.S. President Donald Trump proposed creating a new nuclear deterrence agreement to replace the Treaty on Measures for Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, which expired on February 5. He announced this on his Truth Social account.
Trump noted that during his first presidential term, he carried out a complete modernization of the U.S. armed forces, including updates to the nuclear arsenals.

He emphasized: “I prevented nuclear conflicts in various regions, including Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, as well as Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending the 'New START Treaty,' which was poorly negotiated and is being violated, we should instruct our nuclear experts to create a new, more effective, and modern treaty that will work in the long term,” Trump stated.

The START III Treaty was signed in 2010 and had a duration of ten years with a one-time extension option, which was exercised until February 5, 2026. This treaty limited the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 units and included mechanisms for mutual inspections and notifications. Once its term ends, these mechanisms will cease to be in effect.
