According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the country has completed the process of withdrawing from the World Health Organization, while not paying its debt obligations.

According to Bloomberg, the United States' debt to the WHO is approximately $260 million, while the Associated Press estimates it to be more than $130 million.

The reasons for Washington's decision to withdraw include the "inadequate response of the organization to COVID-19, which began in Wuhan, China," as well as the WHO's failure to implement necessary reforms and demonstrate independence from the political influence of individual countries.

Reuters reports that the U.S. was the largest donor to the World Organization, contributing about 80% of its total funding.
In response to the U.S. withdrawal, the WHO plans to cut approximately 25% of its staff by mid-2026.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order to withdraw from the organization on January 20 of last year, on the very first day of his return to the White House.

The completion of the withdrawal process took a year, which is related to the requirements of U.S. law: notice of withdrawal must be submitted 12 months in advance, and all debts must be paid.
