A preparatory meeting for the Regional Environmental Summit of Central Asian countries was held in Almaty.
Delegates from Kyrgyzstan, as well as representatives from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, participated in this event. Among the participants were also international organizations and partners such as UNDP, FAO, GIZ, UNEP, UNESCO, WWF, IUCN, and representatives of the secretariats of international conventions.
The main focus was on the development and coordination of two complementary regional initiatives: "Green Shield" and "Harmony with Nature for the Benefit of Sustainable Development of the Region," which are to be presented at RES-2026 for further signing of a declaration and resolution.
Issues of transboundary biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration were also discussed, including mountain forests, saxaul forests, and tugai forests. Participants emphasized the need to combat land degradation and desertification, as well as to establish a coordinated system for attracting financial resources.
Central Asia was characterized as a region with unique natural capital, including the ecosystems of the Tian Shan and Pamir-Alai mountains, steppes, deserts, and wetlands. It is home to rare species such as the snow leopard, kiik, kulan, and argali. However, the region faces growing climate and environmental issues that negatively impact food and water security, public health, and infrastructure resilience.
As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to refine the project documents, clarify the logic of results, coordination mechanisms, and financial architecture, so that solutions ready for practical implementation could be presented at RES-2026.
