At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Agricultural Policy, Water Resources, Subsoil Use, Ecology, and Environmental Protection on February 2, the deputies discussed the situation with air pollution in Bishkek and measures to reduce the level of smog.

Deputy Bakyt Tentishev asked about the main causes of air pollution in the capital.

The mayor of the capital, Aibek Junushaliev, responded that the main factors negatively affecting the ecology are residential areas where coal is used for heating. He emphasized that the problem lies not only in the quality of coal but also in the burning of various waste, including textiles and household garbage.

According to him, this explains the large number of protocols drawn up by the municipal inspection, as a significant portion of violations is related to the illegal burning of waste in stoves.

The mayor noted that although the CHPP is also a source of emissions, its contribution to air pollution is significantly less compared to motor vehicles and residential areas.

For this purpose, the authorities are focusing on gasification, as the transition to gas heating makes it impossible to burn garbage in stoves. In addition, according to the mayor, the city is actively developing alternative sources of heat, such as heat pumps and solar panels, in order to provide the population with choices and reduce the volume of emissions into the atmosphere.
