In Kyrgyzstan, a water shortage may arise in 2026 due to low snowfall levels. This was reported by Zhanibek Kerimaliev, the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, on January 30 during a meeting of the "Mekenchil" parliamentary group.

Deputy Aisarakan Abdibaeva drew attention to the expected drought in 2026 and inquired about the measures planned to maintain the water balance in conditions of scarcity.

In response, Kerimaliev noted that regional plans have already been developed aimed at cultivating plants that do not require large amounts of water. He also mentioned plans to implement economical irrigation methods, such as drip and sprinkler irrigation for lands approved by government resolution No. 309.

“After February 15, Kyrgyzhydromet will provide more detailed information, which will allow for a better assessment of the situation. However, there is already a noticeable lack of precipitation, and the water level in reservoirs is also low, which may lead to shortages,” he added.

Aisarakan Abdibaeva reminded that there was already a water shortage in 2025 and asked whether compensations were paid to farmers affected by this. Kerimaliev assured that there was no serious shortage during that period, and no requests from farmers had been received by the Ministry, while the water turnover remained stable.

Members of the "Mekenchil" group are discussing the readiness of the relevant state structures for conducting spring fieldwork.
