Bird count at Lake Issyk-Kul and Ortok-Tokoy reservoir

During the winter period, a count of waterfowl and wetland birds was conducted at Lake Issyk-Kul and the Ortok-Tokoy reservoir, organized by the Directorate of the Biosphere Territory "Issyk-Kul" in collaboration with the Institute of Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. This was reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Every year, as part of eco-demographic monitoring, bird counts are carried out in different seasons — winter, spring, and autumn. The data collected on the numbers and distribution of these feathered inhabitants help assess the state of water bodies and the ecological balance in the region, and can also serve as indicators of the socio-economic situation.

Experts emphasize that the bird count provides a unique opportunity to study the wintering and migrating representatives of the avian world that inhabit the Issyk-Kul region — an important point on the migration routes of Central Asia.

The agency highlighted that such activities contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable natural resource management; the results of the counts become the basis for developing management and environmental protection initiatives.
