The Deputy Director of the Botanical Garden Explained Why the Area Was Cleared of Invasive Plants
He noted that the old fences, installed in 1962–1964, have deteriorated, and in some places, holes have formed, allowing people to freely enter the garden area.
Albanov also spoke about the problem related to the spread of the invasive plant — bloody-red cornel, which hindered the development of cultivated plants necessary for scientific research. "This plant absorbs water from the soil and shades other plants. We have removed this thicket," he emphasized.
In response to residents' concerns about mass tree cutting, the deputy director noted that the work is being carried out selectively. Specialists know which trees should be preserved and which should be removed. The clearing is being conducted in cooperation with the Presidential Administration, which has been provided with recommendations for the preservation of certain trees.
Additionally, he mentioned that there were previously safety issues in overgrown areas, including cases of attacks on people. "In some places, garden staff couldn't even pass through to inspect the trees," added Albanov.
According to him, over time, the attendance in these areas decreased, and the territory fell into disrepair, leading to an increase in the number of drug addicts, as control over the garden weakened.
The deputy director also linked the deterioration of the Botanical Garden's condition to a lack of funding and a reduction in staff numbers. During Soviet times, about 200 people worked in the garden, which ensured proper care of the territory. However, over time, due to declining salaries, many workers left, negatively impacting the maintenance of the garden.
Nevertheless, Albanov noted that scientific work in the Botanical Garden continues: staff are engaged in the preservation and monitoring of essential plants, working to maintain them for 30–35 years.
