The 1969 Tragedy in Talas: Flowers Laid at the Monument to the Victims of the Fire that Claimed 43 Lives
The organizer of the event was Ajibek Aiylchiev, who heads the regional public association "Boarding School-1969".
Attending the event were the akim of the Aitmatov district, Nurlanbek Umarov, his deputy Saltanat Mambetova, members of the "Boarding School-1969" association, as well as relatives of the victims, heads of village governments, and representatives of district institutions.
Participants laid flowers at the monument depicting cranes and honored the memory of the deceased with a moment of silence. After that, a prayer was said in memory of the children and teenagers who died in the fire.
Nurlanbek Umarov expressed gratitude to Bolot Abildaev for the installation of the monument and for the improvement of the surrounding area, noting that tragedies of this kind should not be repeated.
Ajibek Aiylchiev characterized that date as one of the most tragic in history, adding that many graduates of the boarding school made significant contributions to the development of the country over the years.
Turmush reported that on February 4, 1969, a fire occurred in the boarding school of the village of Kyzyl-Adyr, which claimed the lives of 43 people, 39 of whom were students. The boarding school educated children whose parents worked in remote villages.
Oskon Chargynov, a member of the "1969" association, noted that the causes of the fire in the two-story building of the boarding school remain a topic of discussion to this day. Of the 39 deceased, 11 were boys and 28 were girls. One family lost three children. He also added that the association holds memorial events every year, and this year work began on a project to install a new monument in the central park with local support.
