In India, a rampaging elephant killed 22 people, including an infant, in 10 days
The animal, known for its single tusk, resides in the vicinity of the town of Chaibasa in the state of Jharkhand. The first attack occurred on New Year's Day when the elephant killed a family with two children. After that, incidents of aggression continued to occur. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid forest walks.
According to zoologists, the cause of the elephant's aggressive behavior may be musth—a hormonal phase characterized by hyper-aggression that can last up to 20 days. During this time, testosterone levels in elephants can increase by 100 times.
Forest officials believe that the young male has struggled to control his aggression after separating from the herd.
