On March 8, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had a phone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who launched unprecedented criticism against Tehran following the drone attack on Nakhchivan, declaring it a terrorist act and blaming Iran for the strike.

Iranian authorities denied involvement in the attack, placing the blame on Israel.

The rhetoric has changed sharply.

As reported by the state agency AZERTAJ, "Aliyev once again expressed condolences over the deaths of a large number of civilians during the recent events in Iran."

The Azerbaijani president "emphasized the importance of investigating the incident that occurred in Nakhchivan," and "the heads of state exchanged views on the prospects for the development of joint economic projects." Earlier, Baku announced the evacuation of the entire Azerbaijani diplomatic corps from Iran.

The Iranian president reportedly reiterated that "the incident involving the aerial bombardment of Nakhchivan" has nothing to do with Tehran, promising to conduct an investigation.
