The investigation into the connections of Kazakh officials with Jeffrey Epstein was initiated before deputy Askat Rakhimzhanov made an official request to the Prosecutor General's Office.
Prosecutor General Berik Asylov stated that the agency was already looking into these circumstances, as reported by Exclusive.kz.
“This issue... has been discussed worldwide. Therefore, we, as the Prosecutor General's Office, along with other state bodies, are verifying the facts, whether they exist or not,” he added in a video address published on Tengrinews.kz.
It is unclear whether the results of the investigation will be published if the names of current officials are involved.
Earlier, Askat Rakhimzhanov requested to investigate the connections of high-ranking officials in Kazakhstan with Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual crimes against minors. In his appeal, he noted that open documents mention individuals from the political elite of the "old Kazakhstan." Among them is former KNB chairman Karim Massimov, who is currently serving a sentence for treason and an attempted coup. He is mentioned eight times in Epstein's files.
