Congress of Peru removed President Jose Heri four months after taking office

Heri became the ninth president of Peru since 2016, and his successor will also be elected from among the members of Congress. It is expected that on Wednesday the parliament will appoint new leadership, and the new head of Congress will automatically assume the presidency.

Since 2016, Peru has already seen eight presidents change, and none of these individuals managed to serve their full term. For example, Manuel Merino held the presidency for only five days in 2020.

Many presidents of Peru have faced allegations of corruption and inability to fulfill their duties, leading to their resignations. Conflicts frequently arise between the executive branch and Congress, as the constitution grants parliament the right to remove the president on charges of "moral incapacity" — a term that can be used for political struggle.

Protests demanding the resignation of current leaders and calls for fair elections regularly take place in Peru.
