- At a press briefing on February 10, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Kyrgyzstan, Sergey Vakunov, announced joint initiatives in the energy sector.

In his speech, Vakunov noted the growing interest of Russian investors in the economy of Kyrgyzstan. He mentioned the successful implementation of projects in the energy sector, such as a 300 MW solar power plant and a 100 MW wind farm.

“We strive to take into account the needs of Kyrgyzstan and are aware of the issues related to electricity supply and water resources,” he emphasized.

According to Vakunov, key areas for cooperation include projects in hydropower, including the participation of Russian investors in the construction of small hydropower plants.

The Russian side believes that Kyrgyzstan's electricity needs can be met by constructing a small nuclear power plant in the country.

“This issue is currently under consideration. The decision, of course, remains with Kyrgyzstan; however, the neighbors — Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan — have already chosen this path. This will allow for the generation of clean energy, maintain the water balance of the region, and provide affordable electricity,” the ambassador added.
In 2026, the Kyrgyz Republic will conduct an assessment of its readiness to implement nuclear energy across 19 areas, following the methodology of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
