Retractable door handles, which are recessed into the doors and inaccessible for grabbing in their normal position, are designed to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle. However, many users find such handles inconvenient and even dangerous.
According to JD Power, in 2024, electric vehicle owners encountered difficulties using door handles an average of 3.1 times per 100 vehicles.
This decision was made after a series of tragic incidents where passengers were unable to escape from the vehicle due to malfunctions in the door mechanisms. In particular, last year an investigation was launched regarding the Tesla Model 3, where the door opening mechanism was found to be difficult to access.
The Chinese authorities stated that car manufacturers who have already received approval or are in the process of preparing for launch must make changes to the design of door handles by January 2029.
