European leaders created a closed chat to discuss Trump's behavior
According to Politico, a chat was created for the rapid exchange of opinions and coordination of positions in response to actions by Trump that may be perceived as harsh or threatening to stability in Europe. This format has proven particularly useful when events unfold quickly and traditional diplomacy cannot keep up with the changes.
The chat, named the "Washington Group," emerged from the visit of European leaders to the White House in August of last year, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also present and, according to Politico, is participating in the discussions.
Throughout the year, European leaders have shown restraint, responding only to specific actions by the U.S., which has facilitated coordination on issues related to Ukraine and the formation of a "coalition of the willing." However, sources from Politico claim that the situation with Greenland and Trump's threats to impose tariffs became a turning point, after which calls for a more independent and tougher stance towards Washington intensified in the chat.
The publication emphasizes that these informal contacts among leaders are already going beyond a quick response to Trump's words and are beginning to form the basis for broader coordination in security and foreign policy. According to Politico's sources, this approach could play a key role in the context of a possible weakening of U.S. influence as the main guarantor of security in Europe.
