The son of the ousted Shah of Iran called on protesters to seize power.
Reza Pahlavi, the heir to the overthrown Shah of Iran, has called on protesters to take active steps to seize power and announced his intention to return to his homeland. In his address on the social network X, he expressed confidence that by intensifying their protests and paralyzing the financial resources of the authorities, they would be able to break the Islamic Republic and its oppressive apparatus.
He called for a general strike among workers in key sectors such as transportation, energy, and the oil industry, as well as for mass demonstrations in the streets with national symbols to seize the central areas of cities.
“I am preparing to return to be with you, the great people of Iran, when our national revolution triumphs. I believe that this day is already close,” he added.
Protests in Iran, which began due to the fall of the national currency and inflation exceeding 50%, have spread to numerous cities. According to human rights organizations, at least 65 people have died in the clashes, including 15 security personnel and 50 protesters, while about 2,300 people have been detained.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has stated its intention to suppress all demonstrations by January 10. The Tasnim agency reported the detention of 100 "armed rebels" in Baharestan, near Tehran. According to Reuters, the Iranian army opened fire on protesters in the west of the country, as reported by one eyewitness.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his readiness to assist Iranian protesters in a message on TruthSocial. He noted that Iran may be striving for freedom like never before.
Trump also previously mentioned the possibility of military intervention if the authorities begin to shoot at peaceful demonstrators.
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham addressed the Iranian people, stating, “Your long nightmare will soon be over.” He emphasized that the courage and desire of Iranians for freedom have been noticed by Trump and everyone who values freedom.
Graham added that Trump’s slogan “Make Iran Great Again” implies the victory of the protesters over the ayatollahs, as he stated that Iran cannot be great under the rule of a religious regime.
Discussions within the Trump administration included various scenarios for a possible strike on Iran if necessary, among which was a large-scale air operation against several military facilities in the country.
