The work on the feasibility study (FS) for the first line of the light rail transport (LRT) in Almaty has been completed. The construction of this large-scale project, which has been discussed for over 20 years, is scheduled for 2027, with a planned completion by 2029. This double-track line, stretching 18.3 km, will connect the remote neighborhoods of the Alatau district with the city center and the "Almaty-2" railway station.
According to the approved project, the route will run along the streets of Bauyrzhan Momyshuly and Tole bi, with the final stop being the transport interchange hub "Rayymbek batyr." A total of 34 stops are planned along the entire route. The tracks will be laid mainly in the central parts of the roads, which will require significant upgrades to engineering networks and a redistribution of road space.
The history of the LRT project implementation in Almaty spans decades. In 2019, the project was close to starting; however, its implementation was suspended due to high costs. In March of last year, the akimat began developing a new feasibility study, and now the documents are being prepared for submission for state expertise. The planned LRT line is expected to become part of the city's unified transport framework, integrating the metro, bus routes, and suburban lines.
