Restrictions on fish feed imports may be the cause of this process
In Kyrgyzstan, there is a risk of a ban on the import of fish feed, as reported by Renat Dosayev, chairman of the Association of Fish Farms.
According to Dosayev, farmers from various regions of the country are daily raising alarming signals, and ambiguous statements from government bodies create an atmosphere of uncertainty, undermining business trust. This situation may lead to some fish farming enterprises leaving the country.
The specialist noted: "The choice of feed is an important professional and technological decision for each farm. Farmers take into account factors such as region, water quality, stocking density, and cultivation specifics. Even small changes in the recipe can cause fish mortality and reduce productivity, which negatively impacts the ecology."
He also emphasized that feed constitutes a significant portion of costs in aquaculture. After the cancellation of VAT on imported feed in December last year, this step was perceived as a signal of stability. However, starting from February 12, 2026, the tax has been reintroduced, which, according to fish farmers, will lead to an increase in production costs and, consequently, higher prices for fish in the domestic market.
Market participants assert that without access to imported feed, increasing production volumes will become virtually impossible. A ban may cause a shortage of feed, rising costs, and decreased profitability of farms, which, in turn, will negatively affect production volumes and the country's export figures. Meanwhile, domestic feed production cannot meet current needs.
If the situation in the country continues to deteriorate, some fish farmers may begin to consider relocating their projects to other countries.
