Water supply accounting for farmers in Kyrgyzstan is being introduced

The Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Industry Bakyt Torobaev presented a report on readiness for spring fieldwork at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Agricultural Policy.

According to him, there are 498 reservoirs operating in the country, with a total volume of 1 billion 757 million cubic meters. However, the actual water reserves have only reached 884 million cubic meters, which is 30-35% less compared to the same period last year.

Torobaev also noted that in 2026, it is planned to sow 1 million 250 thousand hectares of agricultural land. For the repair and construction of irrigation canals, 12 billion 300 million soms have been allocated from the republican budget.

As part of the preparation for fieldwork, the cleaning and repair of 776 thousand kilometers of irrigation canals, 657 concrete roads, 590 hydraulic structures, and 508 water measurement posts are planned. In addition, 91 pumping stations and 170 pumping units will be brought to regulatory condition, and 46 pumping stations will be updated.

“This year we plan to install about 1,500 electronic meters to account for water supply to farmers, which will allow us to more accurately control the volumes. Cleaning of 225 collector-drainage systems is also planned,” he added.
