Tajikistan seeks alternatives to labor migration in Russia

Tajik citizens are increasingly choosing Europe, Qatar, and Japan for labor migration.

The government of Tajikistan has intensified its efforts to find new opportunities for labor migration for its citizens in European and Asian countries, trying to reduce dependence on Russia, which has long been the main destination. At a meeting on Friday, Labor Minister Soleha Kholmakhamadzoda announced the signing of a memorandum with Benelux and the start of negotiations with the United Kingdom and Japan.

Although Russia remains the primary destination for Tajik migrants (1.2 million people crossed the border in the first nine months of last year), there is a trend of decreasing numbers.

At the same time, remittances from abroad, which accounted for a record 45.4% of the country's GDP in 2024, increased by 50% at the beginning of 2025.

Dushanbe's strategy focuses on developing sectors such as agriculture, construction, and healthcare in developed countries, while simultaneously taking measures to develop the domestic market, resulting in the creation of about 280,000 new jobs last year.
