In Kyrgyzstan, there is significant degradation of pastures, which is associated with the lack of systematic management following the collapse of the Soviet Union, as well as with unregulated livestock grazing. This was reported by Natalia Kilyazova, head of the pasture and feed department of the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures, in an interview on the radio.

Kilyazova noted that since 1991, pasture rotation and the implementation of pasture management methods have been discontinued in the country, and no improvement measures have been carried out. "For two and a half decades, pastures have essentially been left without control. The conditions did not allow for organized grazing management, and each farmer acted at their own discretion," she added.

According to her, the most pronounced signs of degradation are observed in pastures located near populated areas. "Few herders wanted to move their livestock to seasonal or summer pastures. This led to a significant increase in pressure on nearby areas, while remote pastures began to overgrow with weeds," the specialist explained.

Kilyazova also pointed out that unregulated grazing and high livestock concentration on higher-quality areas have become additional factors of degradation. "Everyone chooses the most attractive pastures, where there are no shrubs, and drives their livestock there. As a result, such areas quickly become depleted, while territories with shrubs remain unused," she concluded.
