Tajikistan increased electricity exports by a third in 2025

By the end of 2025, Tajikistan demonstrated impressive growth in its energy sector, increasing electricity exports to 5.356 billion kWh. The main sources of foreign currency revenue came from trade with three neighboring countries: Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. As a result of this trade, the republic earned 97.3 million dollars (913 million somoni).

The largest share of exports came from Afghanistan, which purchased 1.8 billion kWh, equivalent to over 79 million dollars. Uzbekistan imported nearly 900 million kWh, while the volume supplied to Kyrgyzstan was significantly smaller—only 12 million kWh. It should be noted that 90% of the exports occurred during the spring-summer period when Tajikistan's rivers are at their fullest.

Alongside the increase in exports, the republic actively worked to eliminate the internal electricity deficit during the winter period. In 2025, electricity imports rose by 67%, reaching 2.7 billion kWh, with almost the entire volume purchased from Uzbekistan to meet the needs of the population and industry.

The total electricity generation in the country approached 24 billion kWh, which is 6.5% more compared to the previous year. A positive development was the reduction of technical losses in the networks to 15% (about 4 billion kWh), indicating the modernization process of Tajikistan's energy infrastructure.
