A Snow Leopard Burst into a Livestock Pen in the Issyk-Kul Mountains. Video
On January 29, a snow leopard entered the livestock pen belonging to local resident Ulan Bakyt uulu, in the Kara-Tai pasture near the village. During the attack, the predator bit a goat. Upon seeing the situation, the herder attempted to drive the leopard away using a flashlight, Berikbaev said.
It was previously reported that in June 2025, a similar incident occurred in the Chym-Tam pasture in the same area, when an unknown predator attacked sheep, resulting in the death of over 300 animals [source].
According to data from the veterinary department of the Jeti-Oguz district, as a result of the attack on the high-altitude Chym-Tam pasture, which occurred on June 11, about 30 sheep were injured, and 332 heads were killed. All deceased animals were disposed of in accordance with sanitary regulations.
The regional presidential representative's office noted that it has not yet been confirmed that the leopard was responsible for the attack and urged caution in drawing conclusions. "Necessary measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The administration of the Jeti-Oguz district is conducting awareness-raising work with shepherds in the Chym-Tam pasture regarding safety," the authorities added.

Turmush also previously reported that in the mountains of the Jeti-Oguz district, a predator attacked a large flock of sheep during the night.
According to preliminary data, on the night of June 10-11, 2025, in the Chym-Tam pasture, located about 150 km from the village of Barskoon, a predator attacked small livestock. Herder Maksat Amazbaev reported that at that time he witnessed the attack on his pen, resulting in 332 sheep and goats being harmed.
"There were bite marks on the necks of the sheep, and we suspect it was a leopard," Amazbaev noted.
Two days later, on June 13, the same predator attacked a cow with a calf, which became evident to local herders.
When the herders discovered the aftermath of the attack, they counted only 15-20 sheep that survived the assault. It is expected that many of them died as a result of panic.
According to the herders, the predator bit off part of the carcass of two sheep. In total, 332 heads of small livestock were disposed of.
The affected herders express serious concerns, as the snow leopard is protected and listed in the Red Book. "We do not know how to protect our livestock," they note.
The herders are also worried about the possibility of similar attacks occurring in the future and emphasize the need for attention from local authorities and environmental organizations.
