In Batken, a drip irrigation system is being launched on 143 hectares
A large-scale project aimed at applying modern technologies to conserve water resources has been launched in the Batken region. According to the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic, the installation of a drip irrigation system has begun in the village of Zhany-Zher (Tort-Gul rural administration) on new plots of land.
The work is being carried out in the irrigation zone of the R-4 canal, which is managed by the district water management authority. The area of land that will be transitioned to the new irrigation method is 143 hectares. The active phase of construction work started in the second decade of January 2026.
Specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture highlight several key advantages of the new project:
Resource savings: water and fertilizers are delivered directly to the root zone of the plants, minimizing losses. Soil protection: this technology prevents soil erosion and salinization. Increased yield: automation of processes reduces labor costs for farmers and significantly enhances overall yield indicators.
This project is part of a strategy to adapt Kyrgyz agriculture to climate change. In the context of water resource shortages in the Batken region, the transition to drip irrigation will create a foundation for the sustainable development of the local agricultural sector and allow for more efficient use of new lands.
