The concept of scientific and technological development of the transport sector in Russia until 2035 has been approved by the government led by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. This document provides for a return to the design of both cargo and passenger airships.
Airships are included in the list of innovative transport technologies alongside civil supersonic aircraft, ekranoplans, and various means of aeromobility. To implement the planned initiatives, at least nine competence centers and about 50 laboratories will be established in the country by 2035. A new institute will coordinate the research and will become part of the Russian University of Transport.
However, the development of airship construction in Russia faces many challenges. Among them are the low speed of movement and the need to create expensive ground infrastructure. After the tragic events of the 1930s and the decision on the impracticality of further development in 1964, this industry did not receive significant funding in the USSR and Russia. Later initiatives, including those for the Ministry of Defense, also remained unimplemented.
