The strongest flood in 20 years in Hawaii left thousands of residents without electricity

As a result of the severe storm that hit the islands after a recent winter downpour, the damage from the flooding is estimated at $1 billion. The damage affected homes, vehicles, and also necessitated rescue operations, during which more than 200 people were evacuated. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

The Hawaiian Electric teams, responsible for supplying electricity to about 95% of local residents, are actively working on restoring power, and already 1,200 homes have received electricity.

Governor Josh Green noted that the hurricane damaged infrastructure on the island of Maui, including airports, schools, roads, homes, and hospitals. There was a threat of the 120-year-old Wahiawa dam collapsing, but the water level in the river has already begun to decrease.

According to meteorologist Matthew Foster, the heaviest rains are now behind us, and drier weather is expected by Wednesday, March 25. Experts also note that climate change is leading to an increase in the intensity and frequency of heavy rains in Hawaii.
