Iran Attacks American Base Outside the Middle East for the First Time
According to the WSJ report, one of the missiles malfunctioned during flight, and a second missile interceptor, the SM-3, was launched from an American ship. However, it has not yet been determined whether the interception was successful.
This attack, which occurred about 4,000 kilometers from Iran, may indicate that Tehran possesses missiles with a greater range than previously acknowledged. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated the intention to limit missile range to 2,000 kilometers to avoid the perception of the country as a global threat.
In light of these events, on March 20, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington is "very close to achieving" its goals in the conflict with Iran and is considering the possibility of scaling back large military operations in the region. The conflict has been ongoing since February 28, and in recent days, Iran has attacked not only facilities in the Persian Gulf but also the Diego Garcia base.
