The Trump Administration Considers the Occupation or Naval Blockade of the Iranian Island of Kharg
This initiative is being discussed as a means of exerting pressure on Iran to restore free movement in the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, a final decision on this matter has not yet been made.
Axios also notes that prior to a possible operation, the U.S. plans to weaken Iran's military capabilities in the area of the strait. One source stated that this process could take about a month, after which the U.S. could use control over Kharg as leverage in negotiations.
The publication adds that such an operation would require an increase in the American military contingent in the region. It is expected that U.S. Marine units may be deployed to the Middle East in the coming days. Reuters, citing Axios, also indicates that the scenario being considered is one of the ways to increase pressure on Tehran.
Former U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery expressed the opinion that an operation to capture Kharg could put American servicemen at unjustifiable risk, especially in light of the uncertainty regarding a peaceful resolution with Iran.
Earlier, according to Axios, the United States had already conducted attacks on military facilities on Kharg; however, the oil infrastructure on the island was not damaged. Reuters also reported that despite these strikes, oil production and exports continued without interruption.
