A solar power plant will be built in Khovd region

According to information from MiddleAsianNews, as part of the initiative "Scaling Up the Renewable Energy Sector," implemented by the Ministry of Energy with financial support from the Asian Development Bank, a turnkey contract has been signed with Chinese companies Zhongtian Photovoltaic Technology and Jiangsu Zhongtian Technology. The project includes the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 19.8 MW and an energy storage system based on battery storage with a capacity of 8 MWh, located in the Myangad rural district of Khovd region.

The solar power plant project with a capacity of 19.8 MW is medium-sized and is capable of generating enough electricity to meet the needs of 7,000 to 20,000 households, depending on the level of solar activity and consumption in the region. Typically, such installations occupy an area of about 90–100 acres, which significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by thousands of tons annually. For example, in Alberta, Canada, a power plant of similar capacity supplies electricity to about 7,000 homes, while in the Philippines, it serves up to 20,000 households.

The signed contract with the contractor, one of the leading Chinese enterprises that actively operates in various countries and has more than 80 subsidiaries and about 16,000 employees, underscores the high standards of the project. This company already has experience in implementing large-scale energy storage projects in Mongolia. The financing for the construction will be provided through a loan from the Asian Development Bank and a grant from the Climate Investment Funds, with 40% of the total amount being provided as a grant from ADB, highlighting the importance of this project. Oversight of the project's implementation will be carried out by the Ministry of Energy and the relevant department, with the completion of construction planned for 300 days.

This is already the fifth renewable energy project being implemented by the Ministry of Energy in the western part of the country. The solar power plant in Myangad is expected to produce 39.3 million kWh of electricity per year, which will reduce electricity imports by 17% and save about 2 million dollars annually. It is also planned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34,600 tons per year. During construction, more than 150 temporary jobs will be created, and after the project is completed, 14 permanent positions will be maintained.
