
According to the institute, over the past four years, 3,433 cases of seal deaths have been recorded. In 2022, 346 dead animals were found, and in 2023 — 295. In the current year 2024, 1,981 cases have already been documented, and an increase in the number of victims by 476 individuals is expected in 2025.
Experts point to several possible factors contributing to the death of seals. These include unfavorable hydrometeorological conditions and anthropogenic impacts, including entanglement in fishing nets and mechanical injuries. Additionally, habitat pollution, particularly the high levels of petroleum products in the water, may also have a negative impact.
