Snow has fallen in the heart of the largest desert on the planet, reports Kazinform, citing information from BILD.
This astonishing event occurs very rarely — about once every ten years.
On March 10, a cyclone moved from the Iberian Peninsula to the region, bringing moist air masses to North Africa. Meteorologists' forecasts were confirmed: the meeting of warm and cold air caused winter precipitation with negative temperatures.
Snow was observed on March 11 mainly in the Atlas Mountains and other high-altitude areas, as well as on the border of the desert.
According to the publication, it is in the mountain range where cold air meets moist masses, which leads to snowfall even near the desert.
However, the snow cover will not last long: already today the sun is shining again in North Africa, temperatures have risen significantly, and no snow is expected in the desert in the coming days.
