AI can spread violence rather than prevent it - UN Secretary-General

António Guterres noted the increase in global instability

At the ceremony for the International Atatürk Peace Prize in Turkey, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed the opinion that new technologies, including artificial intelligence, pose serious risks and can not only facilitate but also exacerbate violence.

“We hear many statements about peace, yet the actual achievements in this area are catastrophically small,” Guterres stated, emphasizing that international law continues to be violated, the politics of power is on the rise, and the gap between the rich and the poor is only increasing.

According to the Secretary-General, the use of new technologies without proper oversight and international norms can lead to destabilization and the spread of violence.

He also expressed concern about rising military expenditures occurring against the backdrop of decreasing humanitarian aid, which, in his view, primarily affects civilians.

Guterres highlighted the situation in the Middle East, noting that attacks by the US and Israel, as well as Iran's retaliatory actions, create serious threats to international peace and security.

“These actions have already led to significant suffering among the civilian population. The region is under pressure, which could lead to its complete collapse,” he added.

He also noted that the consequences of the conflict affect not only the region itself but also disrupt global supply chains, increase energy and food prices, contributing to increased global instability.

Guterres emphasized that the only way out of the current situation is the de-escalation of conflicts and the activation of diplomatic dialogue.

During his visit to Turkey, he was also awarded the International Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Peace Prize, which he accepted on behalf of all UN staff, noting their contribution to maintaining peace and providing humanitarian assistance in various regions.

The Secretary-General also honored the memory of humanitarian workers, including UN staff, who lost their lives while carrying out their duties in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that their work serves as a reminder of the high cost of aid in conflict situations.
