U.S. Treasury: The Navy will escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz

Bessent noted that currently tankers, including Iranian and ships flying the flag of China, are already passing through this strategically important waterway, indicating the absence of mining in the region.

This statement comes amid threats from Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil supplies pass. Iranian attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf have already led to a rise in oil prices, which exceeded $100 per barrel. In response, developed countries announced the release of 400 million barrels from their strategic reserves, nearly half of which came from the U.S.; however, this did not stop further price increases.

Meanwhile, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated to CNBC on the same day that escorting vessels is currently impossible: "We are simply not ready." Bessent also added that the war has cost the U.S. approximately $11 billion, noting that he has no disagreements with the president on this issue.

During the interview, Bessent was called to the White House situation room, where he spent about two hours. Discussing disagreements with the UK, the minister noted that the refusal to allow the use of British bases forced American B-2 bombers to make 37-hour flights instead of three-hour ones, which increased risks for the crew.
