The UN Security Council discussed the escalation of the situation in Lebanon

The organization warned of the likelihood of further escalation of violence

The United Nations Security Council held a meeting at its headquarters to discuss the deteriorating situation in Lebanon, according to information published on the official UN website.

The main reason for convening this meeting was the recent escalations of the conflict caused by the military campaign initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran. At the initiative of France, with the support of several other countries, this emergency meeting was organized. In March, the presidency of the Security Council is held by the United States.

UN delegates presented reports on the current state of affairs. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo expressed concern that further escalation could harm all parties involved. She emphasized the need to end the violence to avoid new casualties and create conditions for constructive dialogue.

DiCarlo also pointed out that Hezbollah's decision to launch attacks on Israel on March 2 once again dragged Lebanon into a conflict that the country did not wish to be part of. She noted that Hezbollah militants, in violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, fired hundreds of projectiles at Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.

In response, Israel carried out massive airstrikes on southern areas of Beirut, as well as other locations in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. The Lebanese government reports more than 570 dead and over 1,400 injured as a result of these attacks.

Additionally, Israel issued evacuation notices for several areas, leading to mass displacement of the population. According to the UN, by early March, nearly 700,000 people had left their homes to escape the conflict.
