At the plenary session of the Mazhilis on Wednesday, a draft law concerning the exchange of data on the radiation situation between the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States was adopted.
The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Erlan Nysanbaev, presented the draft law "On the Ratification of the Agreement on Cooperation among CIS Member States for the Exchange of Data Regarding the Radiation Situation," noting that it provides for the coordination of actions by authorized bodies in the field of information cooperation on radiation issues, its changes, as well as in the event of threats or facts of transboundary transfer of radioactive substances.
Currently, the monitoring of the radiation background in Kazakhstan is carried out by "Kazhydromet." According to the minister, last year's results showed that "the density of radioactive fallout remained within permissible limits." Given Kazakhstan's geographical location, the need to implement a unified mechanism for exchanging information on radiation monitoring in the CIS becomes an important requirement in the context of digitalization.
Nysanbaev also cited examples of successful international cooperation in this area, noting that similar systems are already in use in other countries. For instance, the International Atomic Energy Agency has a 24/7 platform called USIE (Unified System for Information Exchange in Incidents and Emergencies), while the European Union operates the EURDEP system, which ensures real-time data exchange on radiological monitoring.
He added that the union states will receive only data coming from the state radiation monitoring system.
