The Government of the Republic of Moldova has decided to denounce three key agreements within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including the founding agreement, its annex, and the organization's charter. This information was published by the government's press service on the official website.
In an official statement, it is emphasized that this decision is due to the Russian Federation's disregard for the fundamental values and principles of the CIS, which include respect for the territorial integrity of the member states and the inviolability of borders.
Moreover, this step reflects Moldova's aspiration, as a candidate for EU membership, to reassess its strategic priorities. The refusal to participate in the CIS will allow the state to save approximately 3.1 million lei (about $172.8 thousand) annually from the state budget, according to government data.
Since 2022, Moldova has not participated in CIS meetings. On January 19, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country initiated the process of denouncing the mentioned agreements, which is a necessary step for a complete exit from the organization. The parliamentary commission on foreign policy approved this decision on March 4.
Within the framework of the CIS, Moldova has signed about 283 agreements. Of these, 71 have already been denounced, and another 60 are in the process of denouncement. Authorities emphasize that exiting the CIS will not affect those agreements that bring economic benefits, and they will continue to be valid as long as they do not contradict the course towards Euro-integration.
