The Iranian Expert Council has called on citizens to "swear allegiance" to the new leader
In Iran, the new Supreme Leader is Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint operation by the US and Israel, as reported by "Radio Free Europe".
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed support for this decision, stating their readiness to "fully obey and sacrifice themselves to fulfill the divine commands" of the new leader.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who is 56 years old, is the second of six children of Ali Khamenei. He received his secondary education at the Alavi religious school in Tehran. In his youth, he served in the army for a short time during the Iran-Iraq War, and then in 1999, he went to Qom—a holy city—where he continued his religious studies.
Despite his closeness to the political elite, Mojtaba has never held official government positions, made public speeches, or given interviews. Nevertheless, he spent two decades in the company of his father, coordinating interactions between the clergy and the IRGC.
Zahra Haddad Adel, Mojtaba's wife, also became a victim of the US and Israeli strike that killed his father. The couple has three children, and it was reported that their eldest son, who is 18 years old, could have been a victim of the same attack, although this information has not been confirmed.
US President Donald Trump previously described the election of Khamenei's son as "unacceptable" and expressed the opinion that he should participate in the appointment of the new Supreme Leader.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz noted last week that any leader appointed by the "Iranian terrorist regime" would become "an unconditional target for elimination," and the Israel Defense Forces were instructed to prepare to carry out this task as "an integral part of the objectives of Operation 'Lion's Roar'."
