The U.S. Senate did not support an initiative that would have prohibited Donald Trump from conducting military operations against Iran without the direct consent of Congress. The voting results showed that 53 senators voted against, while 47 were in favor.
According to CBS News, the initiative was led by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and Republican Rand Paul. The document calls for the cessation of U.S. military operations against Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.
This marks the second unsuccessful attempt by Senator Tim Kaine to limit the military powers of the U.S. president, CBS News notes. A similar vote failed in June 2025 after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
On the eve of the vote, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticized the U.S. administration for its "constantly changing goals and objectives" in Iran. Republicans expressed concerns about the dangers of restrictions at a time when the operation is still ongoing.
